🔥 We who run toward the fire 🔥
This relatively unknown group made education available to the poor, abolished the slave trade in the colonies, and attempted other monumental feats to bring freedom and prosperity to a hurting world.
Like this group, the mission of Legacy Education has always been to support families, public, and private education, and this group’s 200+ year old accomplishments resonate deeply with my passion for preserving and advancing it. We stand on the shoulders of those who ran toward challenges in order to create better opportunities for all, and it's in that spirit we continue our work today. It’s in this vein that I created the new program Universal Best Practices for All Learners (UBP).
The legacy of free public education runs deep, a testament to a vision born from reformers who believed in access and opportunity for all. Inspired by the work of the Clapham Sect—a group that led not only in the abolition of slavery but also in the founding of schools, healthcare, and social justice reforms—educators today carry that same torch, working to create a more equitable and just system. While many flee from the challenges of public education, others run toward the fire, determined to inspire and transform it.
The Clapham Sect, a small but inspiring group of 19th-century British social reformers, is often remembered for their monumental role in the abolition of slavery. Yet their contributions go far beyond that singular triumph. They believed deeply in the power of education and its ability to uplift individuals and communities. They pushed for the establishment of free public schools, provided healthcare, and worked to found colonies based on equality and justice. Their work laid the groundwork for the modern concept of public education—an institution that promises a brighter future for every child, regardless of their background.
Today, this legacy faces significant challenges. Teachers are leaving the profession at an alarming rate, citing overwhelming workloads, rising anxiety levels, and a lack of support. Yet, in the midst of these struggles, some educators remain steadfast, much like the Clapham reformers, in their belief that education can change lives. The Universal Best Practices (UBP) program carries this spirit forward. It doesn’t just offer tools—it provides a comprehensive, sustainable approach to teaching that builds collaboration, strengthens educator networks, and equips teachers with skills to meet the modern challenges they face. UBP is more than professional development; it is a lifeline for educators, designed to make teaching a sustainable and rewarding career.
The Clapham Sect didn’t just try to solve problems—they created solutions that transformed society. In the same way, UBP offers a pathway for educators, administrators, and families to create lasting change in schools. UBP’s focus on collaboration, practical strategies, and fostering long-term resilience makes it the ultimate resource for those who, like the Clapham Sect, are dedicated to preserving the promise of education for future generations. Whether you're part of a public, private, or charter school, or supporting your children’s learning at home, UBP ensures that you’re not just teaching—you’re shaping legacies.
Public education’s history is one of tireless effort, collaboration, and hope. The challenges are undeniable, but the legacy of the Clapham Sect reminds us that lasting change is possible when we work together. As we face a critical moment in education, UBP is here to equip today’s educators with the tools, support, and inspiration to carry that legacy forward—ensuring that every student, every teacher, and every school can thrive.
